After a stellar showing at last month’s state Science Olympiad, Canyon Crest Academy junior Raymond Wu has qualified as one of 20 students nationwide for the American Chemical Society’s U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad. Raymond has won the opportunity to attend the Chemistry Olympiad Camp held May 31-June 15 at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., with a chance to be selected for the International Chemistry Olympiad held in Ankara, Turkey.

According to ACS, those attending the study camp represent the “nation’s brightest high school students.” From the 20 at the camp, six will be selected to represent the U.S. in Turkey.

Raymond, 16, has always shown an interest in science, competing in the Science Olympiad starting in seventh grade at Carmel Valley Middle School.

He was a student coordinator for his team this year, organizing students into their events and finding coaches for each event.

“A lot of work goes into it, but it’s mostly fun,” Raymond said. “You get to connect with a lot of students and you also learn new things because there’s new topics every year.”

At last month’s San Diego regional Science Olympiad, Raymond earned two of the team’s first place medals in individual event competitions en route to the school’s first place victory.

Raymond won first place in astronomy and first place in chemistry. He also placed second in technical problem solving.

At the state level, Raymond won second in astronomy.

“It was a pretty good feeling,” said Raymond. “We got a really big first place trophy for regionals, a smaller one for our sixth place finish in state.”
In addition to his accomplishments in the field of science, Raymond also plays on the Canyon Crest tennis team and plays piano.
