Del Mar city manager leaving in June

The city of Del Mar will lose its accomplished City Manager Karen Brust, who will assume the same position with the City of San Juan Capistrano on June 30. Brust has helped manage Del Mar through the difficult economic downturn, has been highly responsive to council priorities, and will leave the city in a strong position to meet future challenges. The council voiced appreciation to her for her service to the community.

Del Mar Mayor Don Mosier said, “It has been a delight to work with Karen, who is always willing to take on new projects (such as the proposed fairgrounds acquisition) with hard work, solid financial understanding, and good cheer. I appreciate how many hours she put in to make our city a better place, and the solid team she built all of whom will continue to serve Del Mar.”

“Karen has placed the city on a solid track towards accomplishing long standing goals and leaves with an outstanding record of achievement. We will miss her energy, enthusiasm and cheerful approach to every task at hand and we wish her the very best as she goes forward to meet new challenges,” said Deputy Mayor Carl Hilliard.

“The city was very fortunate to have Karen Brust come on board in fall 2007. Thanks to her leadership and financial acumen, the city quickly responded to the faltering economy and significantly reduced costs without reducing city services or sacrificing projects. Karen is a creative problem-solver who contributed much during her time serving Del Mar. She will be missed,” said former councilmember Crystal Crawford.

City of San Juan Capistrano Mayor Sam Allevato said, “The San Juan City Council was very deliberate in looking at the over 80 applications that we received. Karen’s strong experience in finance, especially dealing with water operations, made her a unanimous choice for the position. We are thrilled that she is joining us and look forward to Karen getting started.”

“I have loved working in Del Mar and I will miss the people that are like family to me,” said Karen Brust. “Thank you Del Mar for the privilege and honor it has been to serve you. Moving to San Juan Capistrano will allow me to have the opportunity to move closer to our family while pursuing my career passion through serving the people of San Juan Capistrano as its next city manager.”

Del Mar was only paying Brust a meager yearly salary of $170,000, plus $10,000 in transition expenses and $10,000 a year in deferred compensation. Don't blame our servants for chasing the Almighty Dollar….
