Del Mar Village Association pushes for downtown vitality

The Del Mar Village Association (DMVA) is launching a few new efforts to further its mission of bolstering downtown vitality and preserving Del Mar history. The list of things to come includes a new segment on the DMVA website geared toward potential Del Mar business owners, and a new line of totes and coffee mugs that feature historic Del Mar photos.
DMVA is also exploring the idea of offering shuttle service from the Del Mar Fairgrounds to downtown Del Mar during race season. The DMVA has also talked to the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club about the idea of hosting a closing day event.
During a May 9 presentation to the Del Mar City Council, DMVA board of directors member Linda Rock said that while Del Mar restaurants have fared rather well in recent years, other downtown retailers have been underperforming.
“We think it’s because our downtown’s aging infrastructure limits our ability to attract good businesses and support good sales for them,” she told council.
The city has been hosting a series of community conversations geared toward finding ways to remedy that and other downtown revitalization issues. During that same council meeting, mayor Don Mosier and councilwoman Lee Haydu, both the liaisons whom have been attending these conversations, said that so far the community has expressed support for mixed-use housing downtown and a desire for a more pedestrian-friendly downtown.
Community conversations are still planned for Thursday, May 26, from 7 to 9 p.m. at a private residence in the 15th Street and Crest area. Anyone interested in attending should email conversations@delmar.ca.us or call 858-755-9313, extension 160.
All RSVPs should include a name, address, email, number of people attending and preferred location. City staff will then email the exact location once an RSVP is received. There will also be a community conversation held on Sunday, June 5, from 3 to 5 p.m. at City Hall Annex, which will be a noticed public meeting so all council members can participate.
