Make it about helping the kids. We should work to remove the stigma that repeating a grade is a negative thing. If a kid needs to repeat, we should support him/her as much as possible. Use state athletic association mandated age and eligibility guidelines to regulate cases that are for athletics only. For example, once the student hits age_ and/or the 7th grade his athletics eligibility timeclock starts. Once the athletics eligibility timeclock starts the student athlete has x many years to compete at the jr high/high school level. Help the kids that need it. Regulate the athletics part.

If the motivation is retaining a child so s/he can get an advantage for sports - at taxpayer expense, then the district should at least remove some incentive and disallow participation in school sports. What an abuse of the privilege of a public education at the expense of your neighbors.

It seems to me, in a public school system this should not be allowed. If they pass they go on, otherwise the tax payers are paying for one more year and we need those dollars. Send them to private school if you think you have to do this ...

It occurs to me that even if the district closes this loophole that it is still possible for parents to attempt to get around the system by advising their child to fail classes in order to be held back.

I am left to wonder if students who are not promoted for academic reasons should be automatically removed from school-sponsored sports until they are able to show academic success. Does the district currently have a policy like this one?

This is terrible. What also should be mentioned is how overcrowded CVMS is! The school is busting at the seems! These kids are now going to be playing middle school sports for a third year, taking away that chance for a kid who is just entering 8th grade. They should not be allowed to play.
