Del Mar Union School District appoints three new principals

At the June 15 and July 27 regular board meetings, the board of trustees of the Del Mar Union School District approved the appointments of Carrie Gammel as the new principal at Del Mar Hills Academy; Eileen Delaney as the new principal at Carmel Del Mar School; and Barbara Boone as the new principal at Torrey Hills School.

Carrie Gammel

Gammel, incoming principal of Del Mar Hills Academy, comes to the Del Mar Union School District with a strong background in educational leadership and instructional expertise.

Gammel received the Excellent Teacher Award from the California State Senate. Her commitment and passion for education includes being a GATE Coordinator, Thinking Maps Teacher Trainer, UCI Math Institute Instructor, Positive Behavior Intervention and Support Coach, and assistant principal.

Gammel’s 12 years of classroom teaching and three years of administrative experience enabled her to work with parents, teachers, and the community to create a positive learning environment where every student can excel. Gammel looks forward to building a strong partnership with her new school family and local community to create a foundation for continued success at Del Mar Hills Academy.

Eileen Delaney

Delaney, incoming principal of Carmel Del Mar School, has a B.A. in English and a master’s in elementary education from the College of William and Mary. In 2003, she completed a second master’s degree in educational psychology with a specialty in gifted education at the University of Virginia. For the first 15 years of her teaching career, Delaney worked at the elementary and middle school levels as a classroom teacher. In 2004, she left the classroom to become an educational specialist for Fairfax County Public Schools where she dedicated herself to supporting teachers and administrators in best practices for teaching and learning. After five years in the central office, Delaney returned to an elementary school setting. She has spent the last two years as the assistant principal at Annandale Terrace Elementary School in Annandale, Virginia.

Barbara Boone

Boone, incoming principal at Torrey Hills School, has worked as a teacher and administrator for 32 years in the San Diego Unified School District. Boone has a BA in liberal studies from California State University, Northridge and a master’s degree in special education from San Diego State University.

Her 14 years experience in San Diego Unified included leadership at schools ranging from 100 to 1,200 elementary students. She has experience with diverse populations and, in her last school, led a full inclusion program for her special education students.
