Del Mar eliminates massage therapist permit requirement

Following the state’s implementation of the California Massage Therapists Council (CAMTC), the Del Mar City Council voted unanimously on Aug. 8 to eliminate its own licensing program for massage therapists operating in Del Mar.

Under these provisions, massage therapists must still obtain a business license and a new certificate of registration, which will be of no cost to the massage therapist. The service provider will only need to show proof of the state license.

The move brings Del Mar into compliance with the new state law, which prohibits cities from requiring any additional license of a CAMTC-licensed practitioner.

According to a report by the city’s treasurer and city manager, the elimination of an operations permit will have a minimal impact. The city received about $700 in revenue last year and has not received more than $1,000 per year in revenue from licensing of massage technicians.
