Carmel Valley and Del Mar residents elected to 2012 SCORE San Diego board of directors

To better serve San Diego County’s small business community, SCORE San Diego, Counselors to America’s Small Business, will implement several initiatives when the newly elected board of directors takes office effective Oct. 1.

SCORE San Diego’s board of directors oversees the organization’s low-cost workshops for small business owners and entrepreneurs, and its free small business counseling services conducted via phone, web and face-to-face meetings.

Bill Summer, SCORE San Diego treasurer/CFO, is a Carmel Valley resident, and Pat Stewart, SCORE San Diego Secretary, is a resident of Del Mar.

Summer is a licensed CPA in the state of California and spent the majority of his career as a controller or CFO for privately held entrepreneurial enterprises. Summer’s career concluded as the controller for a biotech firm that received significant licensing revenue from several major medical device and pharmaceutical companies.

Stewart has experience in retail, advertising and marketing. He held a senior marketing position for the consumer products division
of a pharmaceutical company and later served as president of the pet care division of a health products company. For 15 years, he was president of the direct marketing group at ConAgra Foods. At SCORE San Diego he specializes in sales and marketing, business turnarounds, franchising and management development.

In the upcoming year, SCORE San Diego’s board of directors and counselors will work on several initiatives to better serve local small business entrepreneurs, including the launch of a new workshop to help existing businesses stabilize and grow revenue during a challenging economy. A second initiative will expand and accelerate the Military Transition Program by offering free workshops to Armed Forces personnel who are within one year of discharge or within their first year of civilian life.

“During the past 12 months SCORE San Diego provided services to nearly 11,000 small business owners and start-up entrepreneurs in San Diego County. This is a 30 percent increase from last year,” said Greg Bowcott, SCORE San Diego president. “A major priority for the upcoming year is to increase outreach to transitioning Armed Forces personnel through our Military Transition Program.”

SCORE San Diego’s 2012 board members bring a wealth of small business knowledge, including experience in financial services, nonprofit organizations, marketing, sales and operation management.
