Red Ribbon Week at Carmel Del Mar

Picture 2 of 7

Red Ribbon Week is celebrated annually across the nation to promote healthy choices and clean living for children. Carmel Del Mar celebrated Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 17 through 21 with age-appropriate activities, including flag football and a cheer dance.

Red Ribbon Week started in San Diego as a way to memorialize Kiki Camarena, a U.S. Drug Enforcement agent who gave his life for the fight against illegal drugs. After Camarena’s tragic death in 1985, his friends and family wore RED satin badges in his memory. Meanwhile, parents across the country were seeing RED, enraged that drugs were hurting their children. Photos: Jon Clark
