Parent asks for update on promised playground equipment at Del Mar Hills

By Karen Billing

At the Nov. 16 Del Mar Union School District board meeting, Del Mar Hills parent Beth Westburg asked the board where the new playground equipment is for their school. Westburg requested that an item be placed on the next agenda to update the status of the lacking equipment. The board asked staff to present the update at their Dec. 14 meeting.

“School has been in session for three months and there’s no plan or schedule to bring back the equipment,” Westburg said. “What kind of message is that sending to the current students, families and prospective families?”

The DMUSD board approved the new playground equipment at Del Mar Hills at its July 6 meeting and the old playground equipment was removed over the summer. Westberg said that about 25 percent of the play equipment has returned, but they are still waiting for their swings, bars and other items to come back.

“We’ve had a lot of promises but not a lot of action,” Westburg said, noting they were also told in 2008 that the school would be getting new handball courts that they have yet to see.

In early September, the first part of the new playground was delivered, “The Big Toy” structure with slides, ladders, monkey bars and other obstacles.

According to Del Mar Hills Principal Carrie Gammel, the board could approve the equipment installer by Dec. 14, with the new equipment arriving by Jan. 16. The installation could take about three days to complete.
