Del Mar grocery store clerk killed in hit and run bicycle accident

By City News Service

An 18-year-old supermarket clerk was killed in an apparent hit-and-run crash early July 6 while riding his bicycle home from work on a winding Rancho Santa Fe road.

A Rancho Santa Fe Patrol officer found the body of Angel Bojorquez of Escondido just after 2 a.m. in shrubbery alongside a curving stretch of of Via de la Valle, according to the California Highway Patrol and county Medical Examiner’s Office.

There was little evidence at the scene of the crash just south of Paseo Delicias and no known witnesses, but investigators believed the young man had been hit by a vehicle driven by a motorist who then fled, CHP Sgt. Matt Booth told reporters.

Bojorquez’s mountain bike had no lights on it, but he was wearing a reflective vest, the Highway Patrol reported.

The teen worked at an Albertsons store in Del Mar, according to the medical examiner.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact the CHP at (858) 637-3800.

Lilia Rodriguez, external communications field manager for Albertsons, released the following statement:

“Last night, a tragic accident occurred involving one of our store associates. All of us at Albertsons are saddened by this loss and we extend our deepest sympathy to the associate’s family. We are working to provide support to store associates in light of this incident and also ask that the privacy of our associates be respected during this extraordinarily difficult time.”
