Hmmmm how come there is no mention of the City's Park Ranger who seems to be able to respond to requests from citizens faster than the slow Sheriff's Dept. Why not create more park rangers and park ranger reserves. DUH

Appreciate the City looking into increasing police services. Also agree with Mr Dernitz that overheads for a city police force would be prohibitive for a small city such as Del Mar.

Optimally the most cost effective way of dealing with the cost of increasing police services is to follow the lead of other communities when they recognize the need for an increase in police patrols. It's not rocket science and a study by an expensive consultant is not necessary. A simple cost benefit analysis would give the City four cost effective options.
a) contract with a private security firm for patrols
b) a JPA (joint powers authority/agreement with Solana Beach and Encinitas for a regional police force
c) establish a special district for police services with Solana Beach, Encinitas and Rancho Santa Fe, already their is a precedent for fire services
d) contract with either the County Sheriff or City of San Diego Police Dept (SDPD) for police services. SDPD has a sub station in Carmel Valley and patrols the Del Mar Heights area. A bid from the SDPD may be the most cost effective option.

If they think they can get a police force for $1,500,000 then they are in la-la land. As lousy as the sheriff deputies are, they are better than that. How about investigating whether or not Solana Beach and Encinitas want to join together and share the costs before wasting more money on another useless "study" by an "expert" or "consultant"? What do we elect you people for, if all you do is hire out your work?

And I suppose you will need a brand new gold-plated City Hall / Police Department building (palace?) to house your new police department. Who is going to pay for that? Us taxpayers are just about tapped out! Enough already!
