Sycamore Ridge Elementary School held its second World Festival Day on June 5. Organized by the PTA, the World Festival celebrates the diversity of the community and this year had themed booths from 14 countries:  China/Taiwan, England, Honduras, India, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sweden, Korea and the USA.   Volunteer parents created individual booths for each country that showcased the food, clothing, customs, geography, history, dance, and music of each country.

The Sycamore Ridge students travelled in their school “villages” from country to country learning key facts such as Italy being known as the country known of beautiful language and food, and why the Leaning Tower of Pisa continues to lean. The students also learned how to say hello and goodbye in Italian.

India had a striking booth with all the parents wearing saris and traditional dresses.  The booth showed the diverse culture and heritage of India and covered fun facts such as chess and the number zero originating in India.

Food was a strong theme at many booths including Kiwi fruit and aged sharp cheddar from New Zealand, “bangers’n’mash” (sausage, mashed potato with gravy) and Marmite sandwiches from England. India distributed “bindi’s, the symbol of power” for girls and sugar candies for boys and students enjoyed a pizzelle, which is a traditional Italian cookie

Musical highlights from the Korean booth included the traditional janggu, a percussion instrument shaped like an hourglass tipped on its side and the kayagum, a 12-string instrument constructed from a rectangular board of paulownia wood with silk strings stretched across it. One of the accomplished parents played both instruments and a few game students demonstrated their musical aptitude.

At the end of each country visit the students had their self-produced passports stamped and continued on their global tour, learning about a number of the nationalities that make up the families of Carmel Valley.
