U-T California 10/20 to debut Feb. 16

San Diego County’s newest road race, the U-T California 10/20, hits the streets up Coast Highway 101 through Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas at 7:30 a.m. this Sunday, Feb. 16.  The much-anticipated running event features a super-scenic, 10-mile coastal course with 20 live rock ‘n’ roll bands playing on stage along the way.  At the finish line in the Del Mar Fairgrounds, former Eagle lead guitarist Don Felder and his new band will headline the main stage to cap the event.

Some 6,000 runners and walkers will participate along with a strong elite athlete field.  Race Director Peter Douglass said “We have some talented young American runners and some good local elites coming out on Sunday.  I expect to see fast winning times, especially on the women’s side.”  They will have something to run for.  The race offers the largest prize money purse in San Diego with $18,000 for elite and local athletes, along with another $20,000 in record bonus money.  The overall male and female champions will be presented with the beautiful crystal Manchester Cup at the post-race awards ceremony.

Every person crossing the finish line on race day will take home an award as well.  The inaugural U-T California 1020 finisher’s medal is beautiful.  The post race party area includes great refreshments and a huge beer garden all right in front of the main stage at the racetrack grandstand.

A great feature of the U-T California 1020 is its unique coastal route through the three host cities: Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas.  “It was quite a process getting the whole plan together but these cites worked with us to make a good safe course and I think we will have an awesome race!” says Douglass.  The U- California 1020 appreciates their support and is giving back to the community with over $30,000 in direct donations to six local non-profits and will raise $100,000 for national benefitting charity, the American Cancer Society.

Race weekend kicks off with a two-day expo on Friday and Saturday at the Del Mar Fairgrounds where participants will attend to pick up their race packets. More than 30 local businesses will exhibit at the expo. The expo is open and free to the general public as well as runners and walkers.
