Sewage spill contaminates a stretch of ocean shoreline at Del Mar Beach

By City News Service

A blocked sanitation line began sending wastewater flowing out of a manhole in the 1300 block of Luneta Drive in Del Mar about 9:30 a.m., according to the Department of Environmental Health.

It took city public works crews less than a half-hour to get the problem under control. By then, roughly 750 gallons of sewage had flowed into a nearby storm drain that empties into the surf at the terminus of 15th Street, the county agency reported.

Signs warning of pollution hazards will stand along a 1,000-foot section of the coast until follow-up testing deems the area safe again for human contact, the DEH advised.
