Del Mar Thoroughbred Club foreman rescues young boy from trailer fire

On Aug. 6, at approximately 5:50 a.m., a travel trailer fire occurred at the Del Mar Racetrack located at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. Dave Martinez, a foreman of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, noticed the fire and quickly responded. Martinez honked his horn to alert all residents of the fire. He yelled and pounded on the door of the travel trailer that was on fire and attempted entry by crawling in but could not see past the smoke and flames. He continued to yell as he went to the window and heard a noise. He opened the window and quickly carried the 7-year-old boy to safety, heroically rescuing him with no injuries. Martinez humbly stated, “The word hero shouldn’t be involved.”
