Nordstrom reveals next season’s looks during runway show

The fashion-forward got a close look at what spring has to offer during the Nordstrom Designer Preview, held last month at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.

The runway show included American and European collections from Andrew Gn, Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin, Dolce & Gabbana, Zac Posen, Missoni, Michael Kors, Jean Paul Gaultier, Versace and others.

Doggie Street Festival gets a barking ovation

San Diego’s first Doggie Street Festival sent tails wagging and pups howling at NTC Park in Liberty Station on March 1.

The event, held to promote canine adoption, featured live music, pet obedience demonstrations, food booths and a rescue dog fashion show with designs by students from Fashion Career College.

National Charity League Ticktockers waltz the night away

Twenty-two senior Ticktockers and their fathers took a dance lesson during the National Charity League San Dieguito Chapter’s annual Waltz Dinner, which was held March 1 at The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe.

The traditional Waltz Dinner is a prelude event to insure the development of the poise and grace required for the waltz they will do during their senior presentation, which will be held May 24 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine.

Cathedral Catholic High’s gala benefits its students

Friends of Cathedral Catholic High School gathered at the Grand Del Mar on Feb. 20 for the school’s annual gala. Themed “An Evening in the French Quarter,” the event was co-chaired by Tracee Cahill and Deborah Oliver. Silent and live auctions were held to help the gala committee meet its goal for the evening – subsidizing tuition for Cathedral Catholic High students.

Help name lamb at Helen Woodward Animal Center

A 9-pound, black and white lamb — nicknamed “Johnny Doe” — arrived at Helen Woodward Animal Center in Rancho Santa Fe on Feb. 15.

Belly Up throws back to prom

The Belly Up Tavern took a trip back to a time when the punch was spiked and sequins ruled. That’s right – we’re talkin’ about prom, people.

On Valentine’s Day, Solana Beach’s favorite concert venue threw a 1970s and 1980s prom-themed concert party. The house was packed with “promgoers” and music-lovers.
Latin-funk band B-Side Players along with The Boogaloo Assassins, DJ Bobby Soul and DJ Billy Goods kept the party rockin’.

Charity Ball turns 100

Since 1909, the Charity Ball has been an important part of San Diego philanthropy. The 100th anniversary celebration was held in the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel del Coronado on Feb. 14.

The evening began with a pre-ball reception for box holders and major donors. The party continued with a black-tie dinner, then dancing to the sounds of the Bill Green Orchestra and the Society Beat.

Rancho Santa Fe residents celebrate center

The Rancho Santa Fe Community Center’s board of trustees and board of governors celebrated the Community Center’s past and present at Mille Fleurs on Jan. 27. The evening, co-chaired by Alyce Ashcraft and Franci Free and sponsored by La Jolla Bank, included a wine-paired, four-course dinner.

Craig Noel Awards honor 2008′s best stage work

La Jolla Playhouse, The Old Globe and Cygnet Theatre were the big winners at the Craig Noel Awards for Theatrical Excellence, which were presented by the San Diego Theatre Critics Circle on Jan. 26 at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla.

Las Patronas gives grants to beneficiaries at luncheo

On Jan. 21, the 14 major beneficiaries of the Las Patronas 2008 Jewel Ball were given their grants during a luncheon at La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Las Patronas president Lydia McNeil welcomed guests and the 2008 Jewel Ball chair Caroline Nierenberg and co-chairs Jennifer Greenfield and Tracy Lyon distributed the checks to the beneficiaries, which include A Reason to Survive, Christian Community Theater, La Jolla Historical Society, UCSD Shiley Eye Center and Diversionary Theatre.
