Carol Farris opened The Hair Nursery, a one-chair barbershop on Camino Del Mar, in 1972. For 36 years, she has given hundreds of haircuts in just 100 square feet of space.
"It always felt totally good from day one," Farris said.
That's why it was so hard to learn she had to move out to make way for En Fuego to expand its sidewalk cafe.
"I was in tears," Farris said. "This has been my life for 36 years."
But, after just a couple of weeks of looking for a new space, Farris and her longtime business partner Tracy Conkey found a new home in the heart of the Cedros Avenue Design District in Solana Beach.
Both said they are excited about the move, where they have been welcomed with open arms and a long-term lease from their new landlord.
"Cedros has really good energy," Conkey said, who began working with Farris in 1978. "It's a fresh start. I think after 30 years it's a good thing."
The hairdressers open their new door June 1 with a new name, Cedros Hair Design. And while the space is slightly bigger--120 square feet, one thing will remain the same: the chair.
Cedros Hair Design is at 216 South Cedros. The phone number is the same: (858) 755-3344.
