AutoMatters+: Hot Wheels Life-Sized TWIN MILL

Life-sized Hot Wheels TWIN MILL

Recently I interviewed Bryan Benedict, the designer of the new, life-sized (1:1) Darth Vader Hot Wheels car at San Diego Comic-Con (for AutoMatters+ #344). While there, we made arrangements for me to drive up to Mattel to take a closer look at that car and also to see more of the 1:1 scale Hot Wheels show cars – all of which are functional. This time we’ll take a closer look at TWIN MILL.

AutoMatters+: INDYCAR Season Finale at Auto Club Speedway

The 2014 INDYCAR season wrapped up on Saturday evening, Aug. 30, with the MAVTV 500 — the Verizon IndyCar Series finale on the two-mile, D-shaped oval of Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.

AutoMatters+: Bluegrass at Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum + November Man

Steam tractor

The Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum is much more than a museum. Its mostly agricultural, construction and early industrial treasures are displayed on a sprawling, 55-acre patch of farmland in Vista, California. Unlike at a typical museum, much of the equipment on display here is actually fired up and demonstrated. At tractor shows in the spring and fall, which are also known as harvest shows, visitors can see how crops were harvested and cooked.

AutoMatters+: Perception & Illusion at the Reuben H. Fleet

Jason Latimer having fun with the audience

Lately the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in San Diego’s Balboa Park has been experimenting with new types of exhibits and shows. That’s appropriate, since experimentation is an important part of the scientific method. Prepare to be amazed by an audience participation magic show.

The Goodguys Rod and Custom Association’s 14th Del Mar Nationals was held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds (home of the San Diego County Fair). This three-day event featured 1972 and earlier hot rods, customs, muscle cars, trucks and woodies – with more than 2,500 of them on display outdoors and indoors.

AutoMatters+: Full-size Darth Vader Hot Wheels car & “Guardians of the Galaxy”

Hot Wheels exhibit at San Diego Comic-Con

One never knows precisely what to expect at San Diego Comic-Con but one thing is certain. Look around and you will find some very cool vehicles. They may be of Earth, outer space, real or imagined.

AutoMatters+: San Diego Comic-Con & ‘Lucy’

Jan & The Simpsons

Comic-Con has grown into a pop culture extravaganza, celebrating not only comic books but also film, TV, collectables, toys, games and more. From July 23 to 27 I was on my feet much of the time, from when I left my car at Qualcomm Stadium and took the trolley to the Convention Center (to avoid paying as much as $50 for an evening’s parking downtown), to when I returned late at night. There were not enough hours to see and do everything because multiple things took place at the same or overlapping times.

AutoMatters: NASA at the Reuben H. Fleet & Apes revisited

Through Sept. 2, in partnership with NASA, a multimedia exhibit called “Destination Station” at San Diego’s Reuben H. Fleet Science Center (http://www.rhfleet.org/exhibitions/destination-station) provides visitors with insight into life and research aboard the International Space Station — a partnership of five space agencies representing 15 countries.

AutoMatters: Flower Power, Fireworks & Music at the Fair

The British are coming! The British are coming! The British were here – in a VW Beetle? I’ll explain shortly. For 24 days beginning in June and ending shortly after the Fourth of July, the San Diego County Fair was in town. As you may know, a couple of columns ago (in AutoMatters # 338) the Fair had terrific action-packed motorsports, car shows and more. I wanted to return one more time – on the Fourth of July, to see what I missed the first time around and to enjoy the holiday fireworks show.
