AutoMatters+: Orange County Auto Show & Innovative Thinium Charge

VW - Das Auto

As is the tradition here in sunny Southern California, the new auto show season recently kicked off with the Orange County International Auto Show.

Press day for this show has changed quite a bit since I first started covering it several years ago. Before the financial crisis hit, back in the seemingly free-spending days of auto companies, there were elaborate, staged, dramatic new vehicle reveals, free food and cool promotional giveaway items. The reasoning was, no doubt, to attract the attention of automotive journalists so that we’d be more likely to write about and show you their latest and greatest new vehicles, but that was then and this is now. Times have changed.

AutoMatters+: Coronado Speed Festival & the Car Connection to the Genome

BMW versus Porsche

Last week, coverage of the 2014 Coronado Speed Festival began with Robby Gordon Speed Energy Formula Off-Road truck racing – presented by Traxxas. Fleet Week San Diego coverage continues with historic auto racing.

Fleet Week was first celebrated in San Diego in 1935, during the California Pacific International Exposition. Since then, Fleet Week San Diego has grown to become our nation’s largest tribute to our military men and women, who dedicate their lives to defend our freedom and way of life.

AutoMatters+: Robby Gordon’s Off-Road Truck Racing, Maze Runner & BoxTrolls

Too close for comfort

AutoMatters+: Unlimited Hydroplane Racing at San Diego Bayfair 2014

Unlimited Hydroplanes at San Diego Bayfair

What better way to deal with the unseasonably warm temperatures than by heading for the beach? That’s what San Diegans and visitors alike did on the weekend of Sept. 12 – 14, as we all helped celebrate the 50th anniversary of San Diego Bayfair at San Diego’s beautiful Mission Bay.

AutoMatters+: Hot Wheels Life-Sized TWIN MILL

Life-sized Hot Wheels TWIN MILL

Recently I interviewed Bryan Benedict, the designer of the new, life-sized (1:1) Darth Vader Hot Wheels car at San Diego Comic-Con (for AutoMatters+ #344). While there, we made arrangements for me to drive up to Mattel to take a closer look at that car and also to see more of the 1:1 scale Hot Wheels show cars – all of which are functional. This time we’ll take a closer look at TWIN MILL.

AutoMatters+: INDYCAR Season Finale at Auto Club Speedway

The 2014 INDYCAR season wrapped up on Saturday evening, Aug. 30, with the MAVTV 500 — the Verizon IndyCar Series finale on the two-mile, D-shaped oval of Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California.

AutoMatters+: Bluegrass at Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum + November Man

Steam tractor

The Antique Gas and Steam Engine Museum is much more than a museum. Its mostly agricultural, construction and early industrial treasures are displayed on a sprawling, 55-acre patch of farmland in Vista, California. Unlike at a typical museum, much of the equipment on display here is actually fired up and demonstrated. At tractor shows in the spring and fall, which are also known as harvest shows, visitors can see how crops were harvested and cooked.

AutoMatters+: Perception & Illusion at the Reuben H. Fleet

Jason Latimer having fun with the audience

Lately the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in San Diego’s Balboa Park has been experimenting with new types of exhibits and shows. That’s appropriate, since experimentation is an important part of the scientific method. Prepare to be amazed by an audience participation magic show.
