Summer is in full swing, and that means it is time once again for the San Diego Del Mar Fair. Last year, the Fair celebrated its 75th anniversary; but while thousands of locals religiously flock to the stunning Del Mar fairgrounds every summer, only a handful know the history behind this signature San Diego event. Originally conceived as an agricultural fair in 1880, the gathering evolved over the years until, in 1936, the 22nd District Agricultural Association (DAA) purchased a plot of land at the mouth of the San Dieguito River to create an official county fairground. The rest, as they say, is history – and an enduring for the legacy that still affects the lives of Del Mar natives and visitors alike today.
The cost of elder care in the United States has been a concern for aging Americans and their families for years. But now, according to NPR, those costs and related complications are set to become even more burdensome due to the steadily rising number of aging baby boomers in need of medical care and lifestyle support. NPR reports that nearly 78 million baby boomers are in the process of retiring – and while these numbers will initially benefit the economy thanks to added recreation and vacation spending, they will ultimately lead to a massive increase in the number of sick or disabled seniors dependent on costly healthcare.
Next week, I’ll Have Another will attempt to net the Triple Crown at Belmont Stakes – a feat over 30 years in the making. The excitement surrounding I’ll Have Another’s victories at the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes earlier this year, combined with the Belmont buzz, is expected to spill over into this year’s Del Mar racing season. According to the Daily Racing Forum, last year’s opening day at Del Mar drew a record-breaking 46,588 spectators: and this year, the July 18 event promises to be even bigger and more exciting than before.
