Week in sports for Carmel Valley, Solana Beach and Del Mar

Torrey Pines defeated La Costa Canyon 2-1 in a North County tournament game on March 29 that went 11 innings.

The win followed a 5-3 loss to El Camino in a nonleague game two days earlier.

Falcons pitcher Pete Mitchell, who underwent minor surgery earlier in the week, pitched seven shutout innings in relief of starter C.J. Stubbs.

Cathedral Catholic defeated Patrick Henry 6-2 in the championship game of the Cougar Classic tournament’s Platinum Division on March 17.

Tierra Falo led the Dons offensively with a home run, a double and three RBI, and Hannah Gilliland added two hits.

The Dons defeated Westview 4-0 in a tournament semifinal earlier in the day.

DMCV Sharks GU17 Elite clinched a return trip to the US Youth Soccer National Championships by repeating as the Blue Division National League Champions.

New TPHS head football coach tackling ‘dream job’ with a comprehensive business plan

After what Torrey Pines High School Principal David Jaffe called “an exhaustive, months-long search process,” the Carmel Valley school has found its new head football coach — only the third at the campus since 1992. Retired CEO and former college All-American defensive end Ron Gladnick was introduced to the campus on Monday, March 17. The burly coach is expected to bring change to the program — a promised “five new faces” on the coaching staff. But, he also brings a healthy respect for tradition, and has invited Ed Burke, the winningest (182-60-5, four CIF Titles) coach in school history, back to assist.

Cathedral Catholic won its second straight Southern California Regional Division II title.

The Dons defeated La Costa Canyon 2-1 in the March 15 championship game at Warren High of Downey (Los Angeles County).

Sunny Dunphy scored the game-winning goal early in the second half, snapping a 1-1 tie.

New head football coach selected for Torrey Pines High School in Carmel Valley

Torrey Pines High School announced March 17 that former assistant coach Ron Gladnick has been hired for the vacant football head coaching job. Gladnick was head coach at Clairemont High School for the past two seasons, where he led the Chieftains to their first play-off victory in 20 years.

The Torrey Pines Girls Varsity Soccer team are Palomar League Champions with a 9-0-1 record in league play. In any other division, Torrey Pines could have expected a relatively easy first-round playoff opponent after winning the Palomar League with an unbeaten record.

No such matchups exist, however, in the intensely competitive San Diego Section Open Division.

TPHS Girls Basketball Team wraps up winning Palomar League season

The Torrey Pines Girls Basketball Team clinched a perfect Palomar League season with a decisive 74-40 win against Canyon Crest Academy on Feb. 21.

The win followed a 60-57 league victory over Rancho Bernardo three days earlier.

Sierra Campisano scored 36 points and had 20 rebounds to lead the Falcons in the CCA game.

Christina Ellis added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Ayli Tulberg contributed seven points and 12 rebounds.
