Piano virtuoso to perform for music society patrons

The French-Canadian pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin is known as a 'super virtuoso.'
Admired around the world for his formidable technique and vast repertoire, Grammy-nominated pianist Marc-Andre Hamelin will perform at 8 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Sherwood Auditorium at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla.

As the guest of the La Jolla Music Society, Hamelin will open its season's Frieman Family Piano Series.

His program will include Mozart's Sonata in A Minor K.310, Lizst's Venezia e Napoli, Faure's Nocturne No. 6 in D-flat Major and Alkan's Symphonie for Solo Piano. All pieces will be played on the music society's "The Belanich Steinway."

Before the concert at 7 p.m., Marcus Overton, an Emmy Award-winning radio and television producer, will host a conversation with Hamelin. The event is free to ticket-holders. Conrad Prebys and Debbie Turner underwrite the Frieman Family Piano Series.

Long known for his matchless exploration of unfamiliar pianistic terrain, Hamelin is recognized worldwide for the originality and technical brilliance of his performances of the classic repertoire.

His performance highlights of 2009-10 include dates with the symphony orchestras of Boston, Montreal, San Francisco, Minnesota and Indianapolis, and recitals for the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, the Van Cliburn Foundation, La Jolla Music Society and the 92nd Street Y.

In Europe, Hamelin returns to Wigmore Hall, and plays additional recitals in Amsterdam, Netherlands; Berlin; and throughout Italy and Spain.

Hamelin has received eight Grammy nominations, including a 2009 nomination for "Marc-Andre Hamelin in a State of Jazz." He was recently presented with a lifetime achievement prize by the German Record Critic's Award, and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2003 and a Chevalier de l'Ordre du Quebec in 2004.
