La Jolla Symphony Chorus to hold auditions on Jan. 4
Dec 31, 2009
The La Jolla Symphony Chorus will hold auditions for openings in all its sections on Jan. 4 in the Conrad Prebys Music Center at UCSD.
The 125-voice chorus rehearses in the music center on Monday evenings. Concerts are given throughout the season on campus, as well as at San Diego venues. Chorus membership is open to community members with excellent music training and to UCSD students.
The by-appointment audition process includes a brief written quiz, a skills and rhythm exercise, and singing a prepared song for the choral director. Classical, musical theater, folk songs, and art songs are appropriate, but not pop music. An accompanist will be provided. Singers should bring sheet music.
For an audition appointment, contact chorus manager Mea Daum at chorus@lajollasymphony.com. Further information is available at www.lajollasymphony.com.
The chorus, conducted since 1973 by David Chase, has received recognition for presenting well-known choral masterpieces as well as introducing unusual or rarely heard works to its audiences; and has been proclaimed official Cultural Ambassadors of the City and County of San Diego.
In January 2010, the chorus will begin preparation of two major works that are seldom heard: Szymanowky's powerful "Stabat Mater" (March 13-14) will be part of a concert of major 20th-century works from Poland, and Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem," arguably the greatest choral work of the 20th century (June 5-6).
