The completion of the first U.S. Transcontinental Railroad, May 10, 1869, Promontory Summit, Utah.
The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, De Anza Chapter, invites students, grades 5 to 8, to participate in the American History Essay Contest for the 2009-10 academic year.

The essays must focus on a historically significant topic relating to an American milestone. This year's topic is "The Completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad." Students are asked to put themselves in a historical mindset and describe how they felt on May 10, 1869, when the golden spike was driven at Promontory Summit, Utah, to celebrate the completion of the first U.S. Transcontinental Railroad.

The local winners from each grade will receive a certificate, medal and a $100 cash award from the De Anza chapter of NSDAR and an opportunity to advance in the district, state and national awards.

The deadline for schools to enter is Sept. 30, 2009, and the essay submission deadline is Oct. 16 to 23.

The national contest began in 1957. The contest is being co-chaired by Debbie Giese, Angie Batt and Jennifer Anklesaria from the De Anza NSDAR chapter.
