Brian Stenzler makes road to wellness his D.R.E.A.M.

Brian Stenzler, M.S., D.C
Brian Stenzler, M.S., D.C. opened his first wellness center in Great Neck, New York in 1999. In 2003, he opened a second on Long Island and was honored as Chiropractor of the Year by the New York Chiropractic Council.

In 2004 he received the World Chiropractic Alliance's Outstanding Service Award, and was interviewed as "On Purpose" doctor for the Chiropractic Leadership Alliance.

In 2006, he moved to San Diego and opened D.R.E.A.M. Wellness in Pacific Beach. D.R.E.A.M. is an acronym for the five facets of a wellness lifestyle - Diet, Rest, Exercise, Adjustment and Mental Well-being. In 2009, he and nutritionist Brandy Augustine opened a Del Mar location.

Stenzler is vice president of the California Chiropractic Association San Diego and serves as a wellness speaker at conferences, businesses, schools and civic organizations. He was a chiropractor on the scene at Ground Zero after Sept. 11, and he provided chiropractic care to the 2009 U.S. Open golfers in Bethpage, N.Y., and will return in 2010 for the U.S. Open in Pebble Beach.

What brought you to Del Mar?

After practicing in New York for eight years and building two successful wellness centers there, the time was right to make a move and begin to expand my D.R.E.A.M. I was invited to San Diego to speak to a group of chiropractors called C.O.R.E. (Chiropractors on the Road to Excellence), and fell in love with the area. I had always known that I wanted to live in Southern California, but was not sure exactly where. I had one good friend who lived in Mission Valley and another long-time friend in Encinitas. I figured it would be a good idea to split the difference and move to Del Mar. That was one of the best decisions I have ever made!

What makes this town special to you?

First off, it is gorgeous. The beaches are spectacular, the restaurants are great and the shopping is perfect for my wife. Most importantly, however, I love the family values in Del Mar. Opening a state-of the-art wellness center in downtown Del Mar on the 101 during one of the worst financial crisis of our day can be quite a risky venture, but because the people of Del Mar are interested in staying fit, healthy and doing what is necessary to create the best life for themselves and family, our center has expanded!

If you could snap your fingers and have it done, what might you add, subtract or improve in the area?

I would love to see more restaurants with an ocean view and more places to eat that are healthy and use predominantly organic, locally grown ingredients.

Who or what inspires you?

I always love a good underdog story. I am inspired by people who are not afraid to go out on a limb to make a difference, even if it is going against the masses. I also am inspired by people who practice what they preach.

If you hosted a dinner party for eight, whom (living or deceased) would you invite?

My wife, Effie; Adam and Eve; Arnold Schwarzenegger; Billy Joel; Barack Obama; Oprah Winfrey; and Martin Luther King Jr.

Tell us about what you are currently reading.

I am reading the book "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell. I'm intrigued by the science behind intuition, instinct and decision-making.

What is your most-prized possession?

I would say my most prized possession is something that I created with my business partner, Gregg Baron. That is the U.S. Trademark, D.R.E.A.M. Wellness. My goal is to eventually make D.R.E.A.M. a household word when it comes to a wellness lifestyle.

What do you do for fun?

I love to play football, tennis and golf. I also enjoy spending time at the beach, whether it be surfing, playing volleyball or just throwing a Frisbee.

Please describe your greatest accomplishment.

I was living in New York during the events of 9/11. Since 1895, when chiropractic was discovered, no chiropractic organization had ever worked with the American Red Cross. I was part of the team that got chiropractors credentialed through the Red Cross to volunteer at respite sites around Ground Zero in order to serve the rescue and relief workers following the tragic events. We took turns serving 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. The chiropractors who served at Ground Zero were requested to remain at respite sites for well over a year - longer than any other health care professional. The following year, I was the recipient of the distinguished Beacon Award for Chiropractor of the Year in New York from the New York Chiropractic Council.

What is your motto or philosophy of life?

Always have an attitude of gratitude, and when you can't be grateful, be graceful.
