Working for a cleaner beach

Paul Cooper of Carmel Valley and his son Cameron do their part at Torrey Pines State Beach on Sept. 20 during the annual California Coastal Cleanup Day, where more than 140 people turned out. Preliminary tallies show that volunteers at 60 sites around San Diego County picked up more than 80,000 pounds of trash, ranging from cigarette butts and food containers to golf balls and a set of handcuffs.
