Week in Sports: SFC Eagles take Lions tourney title


A week that started out with a loss ended with a championship for Santa Fe Christian.

The Eagles opened the San Diego Lions Club tournament with a 9-7 loss to Madison on April 6, and then went on to win their next four games, culminating with an impressive 12-7 victory over Nevada Union of Grass Valley in a divisional title tournament game on April 9.

The Eagles rebounded from their tournament opener on April 7 with a 12-0 trouncing of Hilltop. They advanced to the title game after beating Central of El Centro 4-2 on April 8 and Mount Miguel 11-3 on April 9.

Trevyn Reese had two hits, including a homer and three RBI, to lead SFC in the title game. Barrett Floyd, Ethen Ogden and Cal Roberts each contributed three hits for the Eagles.

Reese had three hits, including a triple, in the Mount Miguel game in support of starting pitcher Graham Gomez, who pitched a four-hit shutout. Gomez struck out six batters and allowed two walks.

Floyd and Ogden each had three RBI in the Central game, and Luc Dewulf pitched a six-hit shutout to lead the Eagles against Hilltop.

Torrey Pines concluded Lions tournament play with a 10-0 shellacking of Silverado of Las Vegas on April 9.

Josh Sabourin pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out seven batters while allowing one walk.

The Falcons were led by K.C. Rogers, who was 3 for 3 with two doubles, a homer and three RBI. Sabourin had two hits including a homer and three RBI.

The Falcons went 3-2 in the tournament, including a 14-10 victory over Cathedral Catholic on April 6.

Johnathan Reading hit two homers and drove in four runs to lead the Falcons.

Ryan Wilkins hit a grand slam to lead the Dons, who rallied for seven runs in the top of the sixth inning, when they closed to within 14-10.

The Falcons improved their overall record for the season to 10-5.

The Dons went 2-2 in the tournament, with a 7-0 victory over Stockdale of Bakersfield on April 7 and a 14-6 win against El Capitan of Lakeside the next day.

Wilkins struck out 15 batters in a five-hit shutout to lead the Dons in the Stockdale game.

Tyler Gaffney had two hits including a homer and scored two runs to lead the Dons, and Parker Hipp had a triple and two RBI.

In the El Capitan game, the Dons broke open a 3-3 game with a six-run outburst in the top of the second.

Matt Moynihan led the Dons with four hits including a homer, two stolen bases and four runs scored.

Wilkins had three hits including a double, and Gaffney had two hits including a homer and four RBI.

The Dons improved their overall record for the season to 10-4.

Galen Morrison and Wyatt Thomas combined on a four-hit shutout to lead Canyon Crest Academy to a 1-0 victory over Kearny of San Diego in a Lions Club tournament game on April 8.
