Don't hide fire hydrants

The Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District performs an annual service on each of the 2,400 fire hydrants in the district's 42 square miles. The service is to ensure that the hydrants function properly and are also visible and accessible to crews during an emergency.

Recent servicing revealed that an increasing number of hydrants are hidden by plants, trees and other landscaping materials. The district offers tips for residents who have a hydrant on or near their property:

-The hydrant should be visible from the road or driveway.

-A 3-foot radius of clear space should be maintained around the hydrant.

-A 4-foot vertical space should be clear from the top of the hydrant.

-The finished grade of the soil or any ground cover should not be higher than the hydrant within 3 feet.
