A single act of kindness from a former employer in a time of need set Ruth Westreich on a path she could hardly have imagined. Since then, she has worked to give others the same chance that was given to her.
With the creation of The Westreich Foundation, she has done just that and paid it forward a thousandfold.
The foundation works to increase childhood literacy, sponsoring reading and mentoring programs such as WordsAlive! at San Diego schools. In addition, the foundation seeks to improve the lives of at-risk women and children by providing grants to nonprofit and volunteer organizations that deal with these situations on a day-to-day basis.
The foundation also works closely with The Bravewell Collaborative and the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, melding traditional and nontraditional approaches to healing and wellness, to improve the delivery of medical care in America.
Education is a key tool in the fight to improve the quality of life in the Greater San Diego community, including the education of those who work in the nonprofit sector for the benefit of others. The Westreich Foundation has formed alliances with the University of San Diego Institute for Nonprofit Education and Research and the Consensus Organizing Center for Social Work at San Diego State University, helping to train leaders to guide future change-making efforts.
