In order to raise funds for new Lifeguard Headquarters and a Beach Safety Center at 17th Street, Friends of the Powerhouse and the City of Del Mar Lifeguards will be joining forces to throw a fundraiser "Party for the Tower" on Saturday, Feb. 7.
The event features casino games such as blackjack, craps, roulette, and a spin-to-win wheel. Jake's of Del Mar will serve a buffet dinner, and the band Java will perform contemporary and pop music. Intuitive reader and psychic Suzy Morgan will be present, as well as Godfrey the Magician. Each guest will receive a free raspberry Bellini, and Cupcake Love in Solana Beach will provide casino-themed cupcakes.
Attendees won't want to miss a live auction and raffle, which features vacation prizes such as a five-day, four-night stay at a luxury beachfront villa in Hawaii, a rental of the Powerhouse Community Center, and stays at the New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, the Del Mar Motel and the Hotel Del Coronado.
The old lifeguard tower, Del Mar's first, was built in 1964. But after more than four decades it has large cracks in the concrete and its restrooms are in poor condition. There are no separate shower and locker areas for men and women and the second floor can only be accessed by a ladder.
The tower also lacks a protective seawall, which often results in flooding and sand blocking the entrance to the first aid room. Also, as the needs of the community have grown and the number of beachgoers has increased, the tower has become too small to be adequate.
