Las Patronas president Lydia McNeil welcomed guests and the 2008 Jewel Ball chair Caroline Nierenberg and co-chairs Jennifer Greenfield and Tracy Lyon distributed the checks to the beneficiaries, which include A Reason to Survive, Christian Community Theater, La Jolla Historical Society, UCSD Shiley Eye Center and Diversionary Theatre.

Upon receiving the funds, representatives from each organization talked about what the grants will go toward. For example, the Diversionary Theatre is using the grant for a new wheelchair lift that will enable all patrons to access the theater, which is located on the second floor of the building it inhabits. The Burnham Institute for Medical Research will use the funds toward a robot for the characterization of proteins.

The Jewel Ball, which was held Aug. 4 at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, raised a record-breaking $1.2 million.

This year's ball, themed "Silk & Spice: A Passage to India," will be held Aug. 8 at the same location. Major beneficiaries of the 2009 Jewel Ball include Birch Aquarium, The Children's Museum, Salk Institute for Biological Studies and San Diego Civic Youth Ballet.
