The Del Mar Mesa community plan calls for "dark skies" in their neighborhoods; there are not even any standard streetlights on the roads through the neighborhood. But lately, some Del Mar Mesa Community Planning Board members have noticed some neighbors' driveway lights are can be seen "blazing" and "blinding" from blocks away.
At last week's meeting, the board discussed sending out a letter to residents, reminding them that the "dark skies" code exists to maintain the rural character of their neighborhood and the surrounding sensitive habitat. Chair Gary Levitt didn't want to single any neighbors out but instead sent out the letter to homeowners associations. If no action is taken on the existing too-bright lights, the board will send in city code compliance officers.
