The San Diego County Democratic Party held an Inauguration celebration titled "Blue Skies Over San Diego" on Jan. 10 in the Mission Ballroom of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The event included a fiesta dinner, music and dancing.
To purchase photos,
Francine Busby, mistress of ceremonies, presided over a live auction for items such as lunch for two with Congressman Bob Filner, which fetched $2,500, and a painting of President-elect Barack Obama by art student Faith Lindley, purchased for $1,000.
Jess Durfee, chair of the San Diego County Democratic Party, led all in attendance in celebrating the first time the county has voted for a democratic presidential candidate since Franklin Delano Roosevelt. According to Durfee, registered democrats now officially outnumber republicans in San Diego County 36.3 percent to 36.1 percent, hence the "blue" skies over San Diego.
Though not present in person, a cardboard cutout of President-elect Obama was erected on the dancefloor. There was at times a long line of party faithfuls waiting to pose for a photograph next to the poster.
