Teens In Action teaches service

St. Therese of Carmel Catholic Church's Teens in Action group put in 817 hours of community service this school year. Since 2004, the group has encouraged teens to live out their faith by getting involved in service opportunities throughout the city.

The group of 83 teenagers chose three main organizations to assist this year: St. Vincent De Paul, the San Diego Food Bank and Military Families at Camp Pendleton. They also participated in the Souper Bowl of Caring, the largest youth-led service weekend in which 32 teens spent 64 volunteer hours raising awareness about hunger and destitution. They gathered more than $1,500 in donations and donated the money to their three main charity groups.

Teens in Action also logged hours by helping the Knights of Columbus, clearing the Carmel Valley Cemetery and volunteering at Notre Dame Academy and church activities.

Teens in Action team leaders, honored for their organization and commitment, included Lindsay Wuest, Adam Espino, Morgan Tibbetts, Lauren Rutledge, Elizabeth Pieslor and Maureen DeLapa.
