Want a passport? Make an appointment

San Diego County will accept passport applications only by appointment starting Thursday due to high demand caused by new travel documentation rules that recently went into effect.

The county has been barraged with application requests since new rules went into effect Monday that require passports for U.S. residents returning from Mexico, Canada and the Caribbean.

According to the county, lines have stretched into the halls of the County Administration Center.

Since May 22, the county has processed 1,286 passport applications.

Normally, the county processes only 350 passport applications per month.

"To ensure processing customers in a timely manner, we strongly encourage all residents who need a passport to schedule an appointment in advance before coming to our office,'' said Thomas Pastuszka, county clerk of the board. "Making the appointment will make the process quicker and easier.''
