Running club celebrates 4,000 miles

Members of the Del Mar Hills Running Club, ages 5 to 11, recently celebrated their accomplishment for the school year: Running a cumulative 4,000 miles.

The team was led by Del Mar Union School District physical education teacher John Sink and met weekly to run a mile or more after school and during lunch.

Coach Sink taught the students to stretch properly and how to eat healthy, high-energy snacks.

For their accomplishment, the children were honored with a plastic "foot" for each mile they ran, which they strung on a cord to make necklaces they wore with pride.

Many of the club members also ran in mini-marathons, including one in Carlsbad and the Mud Run in Rancho San Diego.

During their celebration the children presented coach Sink with a shirt they'd all signed that read "We Love You Coach Sink!" Music teacher Arah Allard was also thanked for her help in coordinating the club's events throughout the year.
