Santa Fe Christian Schools seniors recently showcased their business ventures as part of Senior Business Week. More than 14 ventures were created, ranging from developing and selling T-shirts to food service sales.
Students are required to prepare a formal business model, complete with profit projections, an advertising plan, supply contacts and a cost and mark-up analysis. They also must secure a loan to finance their projects, generally from parents or community leaders.
Once the financing was set and the business plan in place, the seniors got to work building their enterprise.
The project culminates with each business selling their product before and after school.
"This project brings out the entrepreneurial spirit in some students while giving others a clearer picture of what may or may not be of interest to them in terms of a career path," economics teacher Jon Wallace said.
While food service related businesses, such as the Teriyaki Tiki Hut, Crepes Di Amore, Jolly Roger Snack Boat, Noodle Shop and others proved popular with the lunch crowd, the Chicken Coop T-Shirt Company seemed destined to be the profit winner this year.
A group of six young men purchased overstocked T-shirts at a rock bottom price, used Photoshop to design their logo and took it to a graphic T-shirt supplier where they spent hours in the warehouse screening each shirt. They assured sales by having the shirt approved as an "official" SFC shirt by the school.
Senior Ryan Huffman believes the group will turn a $5,000 profit over the four days the shirts were sold.
"I had a blast," Huffman said. "But it was hard work as we spent over 21 hours printing shirts to make sure we would meet the demand." Huffman plans to attend Chapman University in the fall.
The seniors brought in more than $17,000 in profits, which will be gifted back to the school. The Class of 2009 legacy gift was announced at the school's graduation June 5. The seniors will leave their alma mater with an endowment for future student activities, a time capsule to be opened in 25 years, a stage for performances and shelving units for athletic gear.
