The atmosphere at Canyon Crest Academy is very open and encouraging for students to grow in a variety of areas, Sammy Huang said. And because of this atmosphere, Sammy has had the opportunity to excel in sports and music, and become an environmentalist.
He graduated from CCA last Friday.
An avid tennis player, he helped the varsity team capture the school's first sports banner in 2008.
"Being able to be a part of (the team's) rise from a young, unheard of program into a premier, classy team has been a phenomenal experience, primarily because of the friendships and shared memories I've gained along the way," Sammy said.
His other passion for music grew out of his participation in the school's Rock Band and Recording Arts classes. Sammy taught himself guitar, which he calls one of his most fulfilling activities. He said learning guitar helped him become less timid.
Sammy was also a member of the EcoClub and Interact Club.
"I feel I have contributed to CCA during my time here by upholding and strengthening its unique culture," Sammy said.
"There is no other high school where I could have the chance to be all of these things simultaneously," he said of being an athlete, musician and environmentalist.
He plans to continue his interest in music and environmentalism while studying economics and international relations at Grinnell College in Iowa. But he said he will go "wherever my passions take me."
