Del Mar native and U.S. Ladies Figure Skating Silver Medalist Rachel Flatt, 16, announced recently that Dorothy Hamill, 1976 Olympic gold medalist, will mentor her on the road to the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.
A news release explained the Hamill chose to work with Flatt because of her consistency, work ethic and bubbly personality - all the characteristics Hamill possessed as a budding athlete.
Hamill will train Flatt on the ice and offer her support in confronting the challenges an athlete at the top of a popular sport faces during Olympic years.
"I'm thrilled and honored to be working with a legend like Dorothy," Flatt said in the release. "Her outgoing personality and endearing smile touched millions of Americans in a way that I can only hope to emulate. Dorothy is an amazing role model, and I look forward to learning from her experience of handling the pressure of being 'America's Sweetheart.'
Flatt also recently partnered with MAC Cosmetics and Reading Is Fundamental. She will appear in the upcoming World Figure Skating Championships on March 27 and 28 in Los Angeles.
She moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2000 with her family to train at the Broadmoor World Arena. However, she comes to the San Diego area every year to visit her friends and family.
