Week in sports: Area teams out of finals; baseball season under way

Boys basketball:

Torrey Pines' amazing postseason run ended in the first round of the Division I State Championship Tournament with a 60-56 loss to host Tesoro of Rancho Santa Margarita on March 9.

The San Diego Section D-I champions took a 55-49 lead into the fourth quarter, but were held to just five points the rest of the way.

Trevor Newquist and Joe Rahon each scored 15 points to lead the Falcons, who concluded their season with a 26-6 overall record.

Nick Kerr contributed 12 points for the Falcons, and Max Heller added 10 points.

Cathedral Catholic lost to eventual Southern California Regional champion Ocean View of Huntington Beach 67-50 in a first round D-III state tournament game on March 9.

The Dons trailed 42-26 at the intermission and were unable to get much traction after that.

Matt Moynihan scored 21 points in defeat for the Dons, and Everett Benyard added 12 points. Chase Novak scored six points and had seven steals and three rebounds for the Dons.

Ocean View will play Northern California champion Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco in the March 21 D-III state title game at Arco Arena in Sacramento.

The Dons concluded their season with a 17-14 overall record.

Girls basketball:

Canyon Crest Academy's Cinderella season ended in the first round of the state playoffs, as the Ravens lost to eventual Southern California Regional champion Inglewood 74-49 on March 10.

The upstart Ravens, a fourth-year program hosting just its second postseason game in school history, fell behind early and never caught up.

Inglewood took a 17-4 lead after the first quarter and pulled away by the end of the third quarter, when it extended its lead to 54-28.

San Jose State-bound Alisha Eckberg scored 21 points in defeat for the Ravens, and Meghan Brown added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Tasha Quintana scored nine points and pulled down six rebounds for the Ravens

The Ravens concluded their season with an 18-12 overall record.

Inglewood will play Northern California champion St. Mary's of Stockton in the D-III title game at Arco Arena on March 21.

Boys soccer:

Cathedral Catholic's state title aspirations ended with a tough 4-2 loss to St. Francis of La Canada in a Southern California D-III Regional final on March 14.

The San Diego Section Division III champions advanced to the regional finals after beating Mountain View of El Monte 2-1 on March 10 and defeating Rio Mesa of Oxnard 4-1 on March 12.

Jacob Hold and Kian Mogharabi each scored one goal to lead the Dons in the St. Francis game.

Mogharabi scored two goals and Josh Cintas scored one goal and had one assist in the Rio Mesa game.

Torrey Pines lost to Bullard of Fresno 3-1 in the second round of the state championship tournament on March 12.

The San Diego Section D-I champions opened the tournament with a 4-3 victory over Great Oak of Temecula.

The Falcons concluded their season with a 19-5-3 overall record.

Trevor Newquist scored two goals and had one assist and Konor Collins and Jose Aquino each scored one goal for the Falcons in the Great Oak game.
