Week in Sports: Falcons reclaim first place spot in Avocado League

Baseball:

  • A week after experiencing their first two Avocado League losses, Torrey Pines High School left nothing to chance, sweeping a three-game series with San Pasqual to move back into sole possession of first place.

The Falcons outscored San Pasqual 24-3 in the series to improve to 17-7 overall for the season and 8-2 in league.

The Falcons moved one game ahead of La Costa Canyon, which lost to Fallbrook 9-4 on May 5.

The Falcons set the tone in the May 5 series opener when pitching standout Joey DeNato struck out 15 batters and allowed no walks in six innings of one-hit ball, combining with Alex Tukey on a shutout in a 5-0 victory. Torrey Pines beat LCC by 9-1 and 10-2 scores in a May 9 doubleheader.

The Falcons broke open a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning of the series opener, when Shane Bingham hit a three-run homer in the series opener.

J.J. Reading and Chris Benassi each homered for the Falcons in support of Falcons starter Cole Swanson, who allowed one run in five innings of three hit ball for the win in the first game of the doubleheader.

Zach Taylor had two doubles and three RBI, and Reading homered for the Falcons in the second game. Falcons starter Nate Walker pitched five shutout innings of one-hit ball for the win.

  • The trappings of a major league baseball facility didn't seem to bother red-hot Cathedral Catholic.

Playing at Petco Park, the Dons extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 4-1 Western victory over St. Augustine of San Diego on May 8.

The first-place Dons improved to 8-0 in league and 20-4 overall.

The Dons swept a two-game league series from Mission Bay of San Diego earlier in the week, defeating the Buccaneers 7-2 on May 5 and 21-8 two days later.

Ryan Wilkins pitched a complete game one-hitter for the Dons in the St. Augustine game, striking out 11 batters and allowing two walks.

Casey Munoz had three hits including a double and Parker Hipp had three RBI in the first game of the Mission Bay series.

Dons starter Daniel Camarena pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out nine batters and allowing one walk.

Wilkins had four hits including two homers and drove in eight runs to lead the May 7 rout of Mission Bay.

Tommy Cheek had four hits and four RBI, and Casey Husband had three hits and three RBI.

  • Santa Fe Christian extended its winning to four games with two decisive Coastal League North victories.

The Eagles defeated Calvin Christian of Escondido 10-1 on May 6, and beat Tri-City Christian of Vista 11-2 on May 8.

The Eagles, who've won 10 of their last 11 games, improved to 6-1 in league 15-6 overall.

Eagles starter Nolan Gannon pitched five innings of two-hit ball for the win in the Calvin Christian game. Gannon struck out six batters and allowed one walk.

Ethan Ogden had three hits including a double.
