Principal resigns to head San Pasqual Union district

With what he said is a "grateful heart," Ocean Air Principal Gary Wilson has resigned to serve as the new superintendent of the San Pasqual Union School District.

His last day at Ocean Air will be Nov. 30.

"It's always been my dream to be a superintendent," Wilson said. "But I am also very sad to leave Del Mar. I'm so grateful for all the years working with these Del Mar families and wonderful staff."

Wilson has had a 33-year career in education and 18 of those years have been with the Del Mar Union School District. He first served as the principal of Del Mar Hills Academy before becoming the founding principal of Torrey Hills School in 2001. In 2007, he opened Ocean Air School, an exciting process he likened to "launching a rocket ship."

Wilson is about as well known for his singing voice as he is for the way he runs a school. He has sung "The National Anthem" at several San Diego Padres games and often serenaded his students. At a 2008 pajama party at Ocean Air, he memorably sang "The Rainbow Connection" to the kids, accompanying himself on the piano.

The district will work on finding a replacement for Wilson and he said whoever it is will be one lucky principal.

"It's the best school anyone could ever ask to work at. The parents, staff and kids are the very best," Wilson said.
