- Cathedral Catholic continued its assault on the archives, extending its school record winning streak to 26 games with a 48-6 thrashing of San Pasqual of Escondido in a nonleague game on Oct. 2.
The Dons' winning streak includes two San Diego Section Div. III titles and a state title last year.
But for now, it is their 5-0 overall record for the season that seems to be all that matters to coach Sean Doyle.
The Dons currently own the fourth longest winning streak in county history. Sweetwater set the county record with 36 straight wins in 1985, according to the San Diego Section's official website, cifsds.org.
"I think they know that just by winning the state (title) last year we have a bigger target on our backs than we would normally," Doyle said. "I'm sure if people keep writing about it, that makes it bigger, but I don't think the kids really think of it in that manner.
"I know that their focus on that next game."
With a bye this week, the Dons have an extra week to prepare for their Oct. 16 Eastern League opener against Lincoln (all four area teams have byes this week).
The Dons focus on both sides of the ball was readily apparent in the San Pasqual game.
They scored 34 unanswered points to start the game, with running back Jonny Martin running in from the 45 and 31 in the first quarter, when the Dons opened up a 13-0 lead.
