What brought you to Del Mar?
I moved here with my family in 1979 when my oldest daughter Patty started school. La Jolla was expensive back then - who knew? Home values tripled in three years in Del Mar. Boy was I smart! (Blind luck.)
What makes Del Mar special to you?
(Del Mar) has the same small town atmosphere as La Jolla had during the 1960s, but it's better because Del Mar is incorporated and not under the thumb of San Diego.
If you could snap your fingers and have it done, what might you add, subtract or improve in Del Mar?
To totally redo the commercial corridor, Camino del Mar from approximately 15th Street to 9th Street. It's very unfriendly to eat, shop, etc, there, and also to be more proactive with business owners in town to help them prosper.
Who or what inspires you?
The free enterprise system here in the U.S.A. It allowed me to become wealthy beyond my wildest dreams, as have other people I know. If you want to take a chance and succeed, you get to reap the benefits. It's available to everyone if you want to work hard.
If you hosted a dinner party for eight, whom (living or deceased) would you invite?
My three daughters, two sons-in-law … family is everything.
What are you currently reading?
I read mainly newspapers: San Diego Union-Tribune, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, plus golf news magazines, Sports Illustrated, and, believe it or not, Vanity Fair.
What is your most prized possession?
What do you do for fun?
Still play golf with friends three to five days a week. Work out five days a week and just hang out with friends.
Please describe your greatest accomplishment.
My success in life both career-wise and family-wise. I am a very lucky person, but I worked very hard along the way.
What is your motto or philosophy of life?
Stay positive, stay in the present, and dance every dance as we are only here on a visit.
