The Rotary Club of Del Mar is preparing for a new community event, The Chili and Quackers Challenge, on Sat., Oct. 24, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Powerhouse Park in Del Mar. The free event features a Ducky Derby in the ocean and a Chili Cook-Off for both restaurants and individuals.
The Ducky Derby, set for 4:30 p.m., will be the first of its kind to be held in Del Mar. Rubber ducks will be released in the ocean on a course set up by the Del Mar Lifeguards.
The owners of the first ten ducks to cross the finish line will win great prizes, including a new HDTV, netbook and Wii game.
Participants can adopt ducks for only $10 each or multiple ducks can be purchased through special discounted packs. You do not have to attend the event to purchase ducks. Winners, if not present, will be contacted. The first-year goal is to sell 2,000 ducks for the Derby.
The Chili Cook-Off, featuring restaurant and individual divisions, begins at 5:15 p.m.
Restaurants will be charged $50 to enter, while individuals can participate at a cost of $20. Celebrity judges will be on hand to choose the winners.
In addition to those two winners, a special "Crowd's Choice" will be awarded to the chef of the chili that was sampled the most. Restaurants must provide five gallons of chili for the event, while individuals must have at least two gallons available. Patrons can purchase tickets to enjoy the chili for $1 per taste, in $5 packs.
A beer and wine tent will also be available for those guests over the age of 21.
Sharyn Daly, Chili and Quackers Challenge co-chairwoman said, "This will be a fun way to support Del Mar Rotary's charitable work. The more folks help Del Mar Rotary, the more us Rotarians can go out and improve the lives of the less fortunate."
