Dr. Mark Kalina says best medicine must heal with support

Mark Kalina, M.D., and his wife, Grace, a jewelry designer, came to Del Mar from Cleveland in 1989. Kalina, an internal medicine doctor with a passion for providing holistic care, has had a variety of medical experiences. He worked in geriatrics (caring for people in nursing homes), hospital inpatient medicine, served as co-medical director for The Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease at Scripps, been a hospice doctor, done hundreds of home visits and, what he said he is most proud of, running group visits for his medical patients. "I love this mode of care and dream of it becoming standard practice," he said.

Kalina works at the San Diego Cancer Center in Encinitas and Vista, which is a holistic center offering a multitude of complementary services, such as acupuncture, counseling and energy work combined with oncology services, and a strong core belief in fully supportive care.

He has volunteered for Del Mar Community Connections, running its senior health forum for the last two years.

What brought you to Del Mar?

I came for a summer in 1985. At the end of the two months, I was determined to come back to live. I had three more years of school to go, but I knew I was coming back. My wife Grace also dreamed of moving to California, even before I met her. Not that Cleveland is not great. We moved here in '89 and love to live here.

What makes this town special to you?

I enjoy being outside, active, and in the ocean. This is the greatest place to do all that. There is incredible beauty in all directions here.

If you could snap your fingers and have it done, what might you add, subtract or improve in the area?

I would make the water warmer, about 75 degrees year round.

Who or what inspires you?

Beautiful nature. Great healers. Open and honest people. Bono. Steve Bierman.

If you hosted a dinner party for eight, whom (living or deceased) would you invite?

My wife Grace and myself. Bono. My friends Jon and Nance. Barack Obama. Oprah. Paolo Zamboni.

Tell us about what you are currently reading.
