Del Mar Highlands hosts annual student art benefit

As part of the annual Save the Arts Program, some 700 pieces of student art centered on the theme "Nature/Mother Earth" will be displayed by merchants in their windows at the Del Mar Highlands Town Center through April 25.

"For the past 20 years, the Del Mar Highlands Town Center has been an active community partner focused on celebrating local achievements," said Elizabeth Schreiber, general manager for Donahue Schriber, owner/operator of the center.

"Our annual Save the Arts Program is one of the many ways we are able to give back to the community while creating awareness about the importance of the arts and helping to contribute toward local art education."

The town center has supported schools for more than a decade, donating $147,000 toward art education. The program provides 14 schools within the Del Mar Union, Solana Beach and San Dieguito Union High school districts with an opportunity to earn up to $1,000 each of a $14,000 donation by submitting student work highlighting a central theme.

Each school is required to submit the number of pieces representing 10 percent of its enrollment, up to 75 pieces. The 13 schools in this year's program are Ashley Falls, Carmel Del Mar Elementary, Carmel Valley Middle School, Del Mar Heights Elementary, Del Mar Hills Academy, Earl Warren Middle School, Ocean Air, Sage Canyon, Solana Highlands Elementary, Solana Pacific School, Sycamore Ridge Elementary, Torrey Hills Elementary and Torrey Pines High.

"Our students look forward to the Del Mar Highlands Town Center's Save the Arts Program every year," said Holly Vermilyea, a teacher at Carmel Valley Middle School. "The program has helped provide Carmel Valley Middle School and other local schools necessary art supplies and generated public appreciation for the students' work of which our school is very proud."
