For years the Baldwin Grand piano given to St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Del Mar has stood largely silent, used only occasionally for parish hall gatherings or outside events. But beginning May 8, the Grand will get more time in the spotlight and share that spotlight with up-and-coming artists from across San Diego and Southern California.
The 15th Street Chamber Music recitals will be held on a Saturday night each month and feature young artists from all backgrounds performing in the parish hall's acoustically intimate setting.
While the "small form recital" is largely a lost art, the St. Peter's musical community is excited for the potential of this rare series. The inaugural recital will be "A Vaughan Williams Eastertide," from 7 to 8 p.m. May 8.
In this recital, baritone Michael Blinco and pianist Andrew Goldman will present Williams' song cycles "The House of Life" and "5 Mystical Songs;" joined by guest choristers Cindy Choi, soprano; Erick Rarick, counter-tenor; Krishan Oberoi, tenor; and Anthony Ballard, bass.
St. Peter's Church Del Mar has a rich history of ministry in music. On the first Sunday of each month, the St. Nicholas Choristers, Parish Quire and friends present an acclaimed evensong.
Admission to the Eastertide concert is $10, and $5 for seniors, students and St. Peter's parish members. Some free tickets will be available to high school students. The proceeds will benefit the performers of each recital and the church's music ministry.
