At the age of 17, Canyon Crest Academy senior Torrey Mercer has already had quite the singing career. Ever since she was 9 years old, she has dabbled in musical theater, which later morphed into solo singing.

Today, she is on the cusp of her career as she releases her first song in stores: “Goodbye (That’s Enough).”

The first real turning point, according to Torrey, was the time she sang for the Chargers game. “It was the biggest audience I’d ever performed for—55,000 people. The rush I got was so inspiring. It encouraged me to sing more and made it clear to me that singing was what I wanted to do for, possibly, the rest of my life.”

Aside from the Chargers game, Torrey has also performed at the U.S. Open tennis tournament and at City Walk in Universal Studios, singing songs such as “I Know Where I’ve Been” and “Trouble” in her signature deep, soulful voice.

For her, what makes singing so special is that she is able to express her feelings through music.

“Unlike theater, where you hide behind the mask of another person, singing allows you to present your true self.”

For her own compositions, Torrey draws inspiration primarily from current pop music and singers such as Christina Aguilera and Kelly Clarkson. However, she also deviates from that style to incorporate a bit of rock and R&B into her music.

In fact, her most recent project and newest song, “Good-bye (That’s Enough),” was co-written by Darrin Kohavi (who influenced her in many ways), and her own past experiences. In its universal experience message of unrequited love, Torrey calls it a “I’m so over you” song that she says is drawn from her experiences with liking guys who have not liked her back.

Nonetheless, she remains undaunted. “The most important thing right now is my music,” she laughs, “Boys are not my priority at the moment.”

Her song, “Good-bye (That’s Enough),” was released in stores and on iTunes on Dec. 10. For more information, visit torreymercer.com, facebook.com/torreymercer or youtube.com/user/torless2.
