Earl Warren students clean up trash on Del Mar beach

Students from Earl Warren Middle School in Solana Beach met at Powerhouse Park in Del Mar on Sunday, Jan. 24. Each put on a pair of protective rubber gloves, grabbed a plastic trash bag and headed down to the beach.

Some walked south, some north, but all returned with bags full of trash.

Earl Warren Middle School's Ocean Club hosted the beach clean up. After the recent series of storms, the students picked up more than 100 pounds of trash on the stretch of beach from 15th Street north to Dog Beach and south to Torrey Pines State Beach.

Sanuk and Transworld Surf sponsored the event. They donated snacks, magazines, shoes and sandals. The Del Mar Lifeguards donated gloves and trash bags to help with the project.

The Ocean Club is the brainchild of Earl Warren life science teacher Krista Baldwin. It was founded in 2008 as a way for Baldwin to make connections with her students outside of the classroom and "most importantly, to encourage and show them how to care for their environment and give back to their community.

The Ocean Club plans to do another beach cleanup in the spring.
